G.O. 065 - Jen Hopper's Road to Mentorship

A badly organized backpacking trip at age 14 triggered an enthusiasm for adventure in Jen Hopper. As an adult, she left the confines of a laboratory to pursue the wonders of nature. An accomplished caver, climber, SAR member, and explorer, she also shares the outdoors with students through the Outdoor Excursions program at UC Riverside. She and Jason met one afternoon to discuss the importance of good partners, a modicum of her adventures, and the perils of goat rescue.

G.O. 041 - Dav Underground ft. David Angel

Doing “nerdy stuff with computers” eventually lead David Angel to a corner of the internet where he was introduced to subterranean exploration. Soon he was a member of the Southern California Grotto, a caving group. Despite witnessing a tragedy on his first outing, he became more involved in the group eventually branching out into canyoneering and other adventurous pursuits. He and Jason bushwhacked through the overgrowth of a local L.A. canyon one night so they could sit in a dirty pothole and discuss caving, canyoneering, adventuring, administering ropewiki.com, and dealing with the aftermath of losing a close friend.

G.O. 032 - Legal Italian Alien, Luca Chiarabini

Italian software developer, Luca Chiarabini prefers a life chasing adventures. His habitats of choice are dark damp caves or thundering, cascading rivers. Luca passionately believes in sharing the outdoors with others and does so by documenting unestablished areas, placing new canyon routes, designing software for outdoor exploration, and volunteering as a cave rescue member. He and Jason hid from the rain one afternoon to discuss these pursuits, a family trip to Antarctica, and the many things he considers to be bullshit.

G.O. 004 - 99 Lives of Scott Swaney

Scott Swaney is the Chuck Norris of Southern California. At 67 years old, he is still going strong despite his penchant to get himself into trouble. He is a lifer—one of those outdoorsmen who has stuck with exploratory pursuits for many decades and doesn’t intend to stop. Scott was diving into caves and scaling mountains before society had the good sense to start regulating these activities. Nowadays, he is the primary force behind the exploration of Death Valley’s many uninvestigated canyons. Sit back and let him regale you with tales of a life devoted to scrappy adventures and close calls.
