G.O. 028 - Misadventures Off the Map With Bryan Snyder

Self-proclaimed renegade car camper Bryan Snyder has a penchant for finding trouble. Each summer, he travels across the U.S. with his trusty sidekick, Charlie—his aging Jeep. He shares his misadventures with heights, weather, wildlife, and circumstance through his books and ongoing column in the Chenango County newspaper. One morning he and Jason huddled amongst some boulders at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and discussed Bryan’s numerous adventures, his path to self-publishing, the merits of Outdoor Science Schools, and the allure of off-limits European towers.

G.O. 027 - Shawnte Salabert, Human Yogi Bear

Shawnte Salabert was raised on the mean streets of Milwaukie where a local Boys and Girls Club introduced her to the outdoors. Her newfound love of camp and adventure led her away from Wisconsin as she sought the secrets of becoming Yogi Bear in human form. Eventually, she stumbled into Los Angeles where her snark landed her a side gig writing for Modern Hiker when she isn’t hiking or drooling over Mark Ruffalo. Jason and Little Shay Shay tried to stay on topic one night in Silverlake Meadow as they discussed her life and mocked each other.

G.O. 021 - Essential Explorer Kristina Frost

Kristina Frost grew up playing on the shores of Lake Erie. An offhand comment spurred her to try backpacking. This stoked an interest in her that has not abated. Kristina became an assistant director for the University of Michigan’s Outdoor Adventures Program where she led wilderness trips and taught clinics. Now on the West Coast, she organizes women-only adventures and has begun pursuing filmmaking. She and Jason met at her office in San Francisco to discuss her outdoor history, the formation of Essential Explorer, and the challenges of windless kite-skiing trips.

G.O. 017 - Jeannette Stawski Brings the Outdoors

Jeannette Stawski has a long history in the outdoors. Her experiences run the gamut from athlete to guide to instructor and she has collected every pertinent certification one can imagine. Sharing the outdoors is as important to her as experiencing them, a passion that has led her to the position of Executive Director of AORE (Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education). She and Jason met at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City to discuss the joys of open water swimming, the rewards of introducing people to nature, and how a rappelling accident changed her for the better.

G.O. 016 - Embracing Freedom With Alden Anderson

Alden Anderson had an atypical childhood. Communally raised in a sheltered religious order, his access to the outdoors and exploration—and secular society—were limited. At the age of 21, he broke his billion-year contract with his indoctrinated faith and began the transition into a standard American lifestyle. While learning to navigate adult responsibilities, he also embarked on an exploration of the outdoors and adventure. Alden and Jason crouched beneath a tree in a Tujunga park on Independence Day to discuss the eventful happenings on Alden’s quest to make the most of his personal freedom.

G.O. 010 - Discovering Canyons With Scott Merrill

Scott Merrill is an eighth-grade math teacher and a recently engaged father of two. As rewarding as those things can be, he still felt an emptiness and calling for adventure he had difficulty heeding. After years of searching for an outlet for these pursuits, he found a pathway that led him to canyoneering. Now, he balances his family life, responsibilities, and canyon time in a way that has brought him a richer experience of life. Jason had a conversation with Scott and his dogs in his backyard in Lancaster, CA where they discussed the ways his life has improved in the last few years.

G.O. 005 - Dirtbagging with Nhung Luong

Nhung Luong is scared of bears, but not of traveling the world solo. Her global travels began as a newborn when her family struggled to escape persecution in Vietnam, ultimately finding a new home in Australia. Recently she threw herself into a three-month nomadic adventure across the united States letting fate and circumstance decide her course. Much of her trip has involved climbing throughout the states and adopting the dirtbag lifestyle. Although traveling solo, she has spent very little time alone having acquired new friends from across the globe. She and Jason initially met climbing in Nevada and reunited in Yosemite’s Camp 4 to discuss how her wanderings have affected her perspective on life.

G.O. 003 - The Multi-faceted Saveria Tilden

Saveria Tilden keeps busy. When she discovered the outdoors, she realized it needed to be shared. She made that happen by becoming an educator and consultant for various businesses and organizations. She works with the American Hiking Society, the Sierra Club, REI Outdoor School, Transforming Youth Outdoors, IslandWood, and Nature Play Western Australia. And she still finds time for herself outdoors. Jason and Saveria weathered a Southern California drizzle storm to discuss her role in the outdoors and why she values it.

G.O. 002 - Canyon Lessons and Klaus Gerhart

Klaus Gerhart wasn’t always active outdoors. There was a time when his primary exercise was operating a television remote. Several years ago he decided to journey outside and the course of his life changed drastically. The discovery of technical canyoneering ended any desire to return to a sedentary existence. A few years later he would be recognized as an expert in the field. He is the founder of Uber Adventures, a Los Angeles based training school and gear shop specializing in canyoneering. Jason joined him in his air-conditioned shop in heat-ridden Chatsworth to discuss what drew him to canyoneering and how it has impacted his life.
