Olivia Round has had a deep-seated fear of men and sexual assault for her entire life. Fed up with the way this anxiety interfered with her daily life, she sought a solution. At 21, Olivia rode her bicycle 5,000 miles across the United States—alone. She and Jason spoke over Skype one morning about this journey, her path to healing, penning a memoir, and Russian mystics.

G.O. 044 - Sarah Tiedemann, Hesitant Hiker

Sarah Tiedemann grew up indoors in New Jersey living out her childhood adventures in books while developing an intense fear of the unknown world around her. A move to Hawaii at 17 introduced her to the wonders of nature. Her anxiety still remained, but the rewards outweighed the fear and the Hesitant Hiker was born. Sarah recently self-published a book sharing her approach to combatting these fears and why it is a battle worth waging. She and Jason met in Mercer County Park, NJ to discuss the powers and weaknesses of fear.

G.O. 037 - Alan Gegax, Vegas' Hiking Mailman

And when not leading hikes, he officiates outdoor weddings and writes stories for Desert Companion Magazine. Alan and Jason hid amongst a pile of rocks in Calico Hills and discussed the finer points of hiking groups, disastrous first backpacking trips, the joys of scrambling over rocks, and the ways the outdoors can change a person for the better.

At the age of 20, Alex is now an endurance adventurer, motivational speaker, charity fundraiser, and published author. G.O. 027 - Shawnte Salabert, Human Yogi Bear

Shawnte Salabert was raised on the mean streets of Milwaukie where a local Boys and Girls Club introduced her to the outdoors. Her newfound love of camp and adventure led her away from Wisconsin as she sought the secrets of becoming Yogi Bear in human form. Eventually, she stumbled into Los Angeles where her snark landed her a side gig writing for Modern Hiker when she isn’t hiking or drooling over Mark Ruffalo. Jason and Little Shay Shay tried to stay on topic one night in Silverlake Meadow as they discussed her life and mocked each other.

Esme and Jason met at the La Brea Tar Pits one evening to discuss the exploratory merits of journalism, the appeal of scaling rocks, and life after youth ski racing.
