It was early in my backpacking career and it tested me in a way I had never been tested before. My life truly can be split into before and after the West Coast Trail. ____________________ In 2010, Jason and Steven Calcote embarked on the week long journey of hiking Vancouver Island’s beloved West Coast Trail. Four days of non-stop rain, swollen rivers, and numerous obstacles would create a seminal event in their outdoor experiences. This is their story of accepting hardship and chasing epiphanies. ____________________ This originally appeared as an audio-only episode of the G.O. Get Outside podcast in 2019. This is an enhanced edition featuring photos and video from the hike. The fellas hiked this trail in 2010 with a malfunctioning point-n-shoot camera and a first generation GoPro HD Hero. That’s right—first generation GoPro—when it had no monitor (no way to see what you were shooting or review it), a clunky plastic case, a really strong fisheye lens, lower resolution hardware, and a confounding user interface. But, it was an amazing camera at the time.
