Hidden Wildlife: The Secret World of LA's Animals

Jason’s foolish mistake triggers a full-blown rescue mission on the remote Lost Coast Trail in Northern California—a completely unnecessary rescue mission. This egregious error activates the US Coast Guard and California Emergency Services. The group of backpackers is fully unaware of the chaos occurring off trail until a helicopter starts following their every move. Watch as Jason makes an utter fool of himself and engross yourself in the beauty of the beloved beach hike known as the Lost Coast Trail. The Lost Coast Trail is a gorgeous 25 mile backpacking hike through the King Range National Conservation Area. Known for its beauty, sneaker waves, highly variable tides, black sand beaches, river crossings, inclement weather, and cliff sides. Jason, five other friends, and a puppy hiked it in March 2024. ____________________ Questions About the inReach Mishap: 1) What model inReach were you using? It was an early model from before Garmin acquired DeLorme. More than a decade old. 2) How did you trigger an SOS by accident? The switch that locked the SOS button on this early inReach model was fiddly. It could appear to be locked when it was not. Sometimes the switch easily clicked into place, other times it required a lot more force than seemed necessary. The unit was turned off. Jason was not aware it could still be activated when off if the SOS button was depressed for an extended period of time. 3) Why was the inReach in your pack? The clip that attaches it to a backpack strap had recently broken off. It still had a small carabiner on a lanyard for attaching to a pack. Unfortunately, it would bounce around annoyingly without the clip holding it in place. Jason was also worried it may snag on something and be unexpectedly lost without the clip holding it steady and working as a second (redundant) attachment point. Despite all of this, you can see Jason wearing the floppy inReach on his pack after the SOS mishap. He didn’t dare accidentally trigger another unneeded rescue. 4) Did you get charged for the rescue? Thankfully, no. California does not want to discourage needed rescues by causing people to second guess requesting one. Jason still feels terrible and feels owes a debt to all of the rescue services and other tax payers—and his friends and family. Emergency services and Garmin handled the situation expertly as everyone freaked out in the front country attested to him later. 5) Do I need to worry about this problem with my inReach? Hopefully not. Newer models have addressed this issue and other issues. Jason replaced this older inReach with a newer inReach Mini and hopes to never repeat this sort of mistake. 6) How could you confuse the notification noise for a bird tweet? Because it was inside the pack, the sound was muffled and distorted and sounded like it was coming from the wooded areas instead of inside the backpack. Atajate is a pueblo blanco located in a particularly gorgeous and riparian area in the mountains of Málaga (Southern Spain). On the edge of town is a stunning and somewhat challenging via ferrata route. It is a mix of verticals, traverses, overhangs, and a particularly long Tibetan bridge. Ending My Day With Another Via Ferrata

Right along the edge of the town of Montejaque sits a moderately strenuous K4 via ferrata. It features steep climbs, several overhangs, an impressive 72m (236 ft) zipline, and spectacular views of the region. I climbed it at the end of a long day of hiking and after three other via ferrata climbs. It was a rewarding and tiring experience. I definitely recommend getting a running start on the zipline and not wearing a heavy backpack so you don’t struggle through it like I did. Warning - lots of cursing ahead. I Attempted Spain's GR228 in a Single Day (Did I Make It?) Can I hike the entire GR228 trail in one day? I decided to find out. Follow along and see how the adventure unfolded. The GR 228 is one of Spain’s lesser-known long-distance hiking trails. It is called “El Anillo Verde de Bilbao,” the Green Ring of Bilbao. It is a 39km (24 mile) walking path that connects various green areas throughout and around the city of Bilbao. It takes you through urban areas like Deusto and Zorroza, but also on a looping course through the natural areas surrounding the city. Highlights include the mountain peaks of Monte Avril and Pagasarri. I'm an American expat living in Spain and getting out on trails like this is one of the perks of living here. In December of 2024, Jason attempted a 60 mile backpacking route through the mountains of Southern Spain—alone. It would start in beautiful Ronda, in the mountains of Southern Spain—and end at Estepona along the Mediterranean coast. He also hoped to climb all 16 via ferratas along the way. With winter approaching, limited time, and minimal gear, it would be a challenge. Backpacking in Spain is certainly different from in the US. Spending a month on the JMT (John Muir Trail) in 2019 was one of my most beloved experiences. I hiked it later in the season—conditions were perfect, the landscape was spectacular, and the people I met were amazing. When my friend Scott proposed hiking a weeklong section of the trail in 2023, of course I joined in. It would involve hiking in at Duck Pass and out at Piute Pass, two sections of trail I had never visited. The winter had been exceptionally rainy and snowy. We’d be hiking in July, earlier in the season. We knew it would be more challenging. We didn’t realize just how much. Have you ever wanted to drive across the entire United States? So did we. We were lucky enough to make it happen in 2016 thanks to a job with a company named TYLT. Come along with Jason and Erika as we drive a little Chevy coupe 13,510 miles across the US passing through 42 states along the way. Not only do we explore the cities and landscapes the US has to offer, but we also meet up with interesting people like filmmakers, photographers, and BASE jumpers. And amongst all of the driving, camping, climbing, canyoneering, and corn mazes—we still make time to create podcasts and manga from our tent.
