On the edge of town is a stunning and somewhat challenging via ferrata route. It is a mix of verticals, traverses, overhangs, and a particularly long Tibetan bridge. Come enjoy the spectacular views from the safety of your computer screen. In December of 2024, Jason attempted a 60 mile backpacking route through the mountains of Southern Spain—alone. It began in the town of Ronda and ended outside of Estepona. 16 via ferrata routes intersected with his 4 day hike—he climbed 10 of them. This video features 1 of those routes. End the Day With a Climb

Right along the edge of the town of Montejaque sits a moderately strenuous K4 via ferrata. It features steep climbs, several overhangs, an impressive 72m (236 ft) zipline, and spectacular views of the region. I climbed it at the end of a long day of hiking and after three other via ferrata climbs. It was a rewarding and tiring experience. I definitely recommend getting a running start on the zipline and not wearing a heavy backpack so you don’t struggle through it like I did. Warning - lots of cursing ahead. Presa de los Caballeros are 3 recently created via ferrata routes traversing a dam near the town of Montejaque in Southern Spain. The three VFs vary in difficulty and are linked together by a suspension bridge and a zipline. The area is gorgeous, the climbing is enjoyable, and two of the routes begin in a cave. I know, YouTube titles are usually gross exaggerations and clickbait, but this trail really did change my life. It was early in my backpacking career and it tested me in a way I had never been tested before. My life truly can be split into before and after the West Coast Trail. ____________________ In 2010, Jason and Steven Calcote embarked on the week long journey of hiking Vancouver Island’s beloved West Coast Trail. Four days of non-stop rain, swollen rivers, and numerous obstacles would create a seminal event in their outdoor experiences. This is their story of accepting hardship and chasing epiphanies. ____________________ This originally appeared as an audio-only episode of the G.O. Get Outside podcast in 2019. This is an enhanced edition featuring photos and video from the hike. The fellas hiked this trail in 2010 with a malfunctioning point-n-shoot camera and a first generation GoPro HD Hero. That’s right—first generation GoPro—when it had no monitor (no way to see what you were shooting or review it), a clunky plastic case, a really strong fisheye lens, lower resolution hardware, and a confounding user interface. But, it was an amazing camera at the time. Fed from the outflow of Shadow Lake, it is full of exciting waterfalls begging to be rappelled.
