G.O. 047 - Uphill on the PCT with Dan Sedlacek

Dan Sedlacek, at 14, was inspired to seek out the PCT when he met a group of friendly thru-hikers. Years later, he and his brother tackled the 2600+ mile trail using gear they had made themselves. Here a second inspiration would hit, a desire to create a handmade gear company. Now, Dan runs Uphill Designs located in Seattle. He and Jason sat in the office one morning discussing the triumphs and travails of the Pacific Crest Trail and running a small business.

G.O. 031 - Roundtable: Solo Backpacking

Some choose to travel into the wilderness alone. Jason discusses the pros and cons of solitary backpacking with previous show guests: Shawnte, Pamela, and Alden in between sips of cocoa and bouts of laughter. They review the whys, the dangers, loneliness, planning, packing, navigation, hiker stink, 29 cat holes, and the rancid aroma of bear saliva.

G.O. 027 - Shawnte Salabert, Human Yogi Bear

Shawnte Salabert was raised on the mean streets of Milwaukie where a local Boys and Girls Club introduced her to the outdoors. Her newfound love of camp and adventure led her away from Wisconsin as she sought the secrets of becoming Yogi Bear in human form. Eventually, she stumbled into Los Angeles where her snark landed her a side gig writing for Modern Hiker when she isn’t hiking or drooling over Mark Ruffalo. Jason and Little Shay Shay tried to stay on topic one night in Silverlake Meadow as they discussed her life and mocked each other.

G.O. 013 - Downhill and Up With Pamela Zoolalian

Pamela Zoolalian wants to do everything. She is not content pursuing only one sport, but lets the seasons decide what is available to her. Whether mountaineering, surfing, backpacking, snowboarding, kayaking, or mountain biking, she is most fulfilled outdoors. In 2013, she decided to hike the 272 mile John Muir Trail. In addition to her love for the slow-moving world of backpacking, Pamela also has an appetite for speed with a past in professional street luge. She is the only female athlete to compete in the ESPN X Games, Playstation Xtreme games, and NBC Gravity Games. She and Jason met at the Eaton Nature Center one afternoon to discuss these lifelong passions.
