G.O. 026 - Fresh Off The Grid's Extended Roadtrip

Megan McDuffie and Michael Van Vliet abandoned their traditional respectable lifestyles, moved into their passenger vehicle, and embarked on a  long-term roadtrip across the United States and Canada. During their travels they maintain the website Fresh Off The Grid where they share travel recipes and lessons from their adventures. Jason met Megan and Michael at Little Lander’s Park in Tujunga one evening to discuss their wanderings, strategies, and eschewing excuses to make the most of what is available.

G.O. 025 -  Francisco Camberos, Functional Fitness Freak

Francisco Camberos spent his youth being chased by dogs and tagging public property before realizing he could better focus his energy and not squander the opportunities his parents provided to him. He began experimenting with numerous fitness regimens before forming his own approach to the pursuit of functional fitness. Francisco and Jason hung out in Chatsworth Park North one night discussing childhood, fitness, canyoneering, and salami sponsorships.

Ex-Mighty Mite, Esme Deprez is a journalist for Bloomberg Businessweek concentrated on delivering unbiased government and politics oriented stories. The social constructions of mankind are not her sole interests and she often heads outside of the bounds of society to climb rad rocks or ski fresh powder. Last year she traveled to Bulgaria to research the world’s most successful climbing wall company. Esme and Jason met at the La Brea Tar Pits one evening to discuss the exploratory merits of journalism, the appeal of scaling rocks, and life after youth ski racing.

G.O. 022 - Dr. Tommy Day is Real In

Tommy Day is a physician, but he is also an adventurer. Traveling on two wheels or casting for fish bring him a joy he can’t find elsewhere. He is also a photographer. Capturing moments in still images or in moving video allow him to share stories that matter with others. He and Jason sat on Tommy’s roof deck at his home in Oregon after multiple days of shooting video in wet canyons to discuss his outdoor pursuits and the challenges of career changes.

G.O. 021 - Essential Explorer Kristina Frost

Kristina Frost grew up playing on the shores of Lake Erie. An offhand comment spurred her to try backpacking. This stoked an interest in her that has not abated. Kristina became an assistant director for the University of Michigan’s Outdoor Adventures Program where she led wilderness trips and taught clinics. Now on the West Coast, she organizes women-only adventures and has begun pursuing filmmaking. She and Jason met at her office in San Francisco to discuss her outdoor history, the formation of Essential Explorer, and the challenges of windless kite-skiing trips.

The cherubic Jake Huddleston grew up in the wonderland of the Pacific Northwest traipsing through its wilderness with his family and the Boy Scouts. Shortly after reaching adulthood he moved into a van and headed for Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking. There he would be introduced to the sport of canyoneering and began concocting ways to bring delicate camera gear through these rugged landscapes. Jake and Jason relaxed by the Kern River one morning following a long day of rappelling and bushwhacking to discuss canyoneering, van life, and outdoor filmmaking.

G.O. 019 - All the Peaks With Peakbagging Chick

Peakbagging Chick is constantly outdoors hiking and climbing or introducing other women to adventure via Her Own Trail Meetup Group. In 2014, she adopted the moniker Peakbagging Chick after deciding to challenge herself by climbing 100 peaks in one year. She and Jason sat beneath a climbing route in Texas Canyon and discussed the difficulties of overcoming laziness and a surprise staph infection while trying to reach her goal and earn her nickname.

G.O. 018 - A Steve Sieren is Worth 1000 Pictures

Steve Sieren is a California native with a great eye for capturing its beauty. An architectural photographer by day, he seizes what moments he may to travel into the wilderness backpacking or canyoneering, always with a camera in tow. He is also a father who tries to share the outdoors with his young son as much as possible. Steve and Jason conversed in Mann Biomedical Park in Valencia about his outdoor and photographic pursuits and about the lewd circumstances under which they met.

G.O. 017 - Jeannette Stawski Brings the Outdoors

Jeannette Stawski has a long history in the outdoors. Her experiences run the gamut from athlete to guide to instructor and she has collected every pertinent certification one can imagine. Sharing the outdoors is as important to her as experiencing them, a passion that has led her to the position of Executive Director of AORE (Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education). She and Jason met at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City to discuss the joys of open water swimming, the rewards of introducing people to nature, and how a rappelling accident changed her for the better.
