When not dressed as a cow for the Butter and Eggs Parade, a young EC spent her time hiking, swimming, and camping. Serendipitous moments in her adulthood introduced her to new passions: caving, canyoneering, and diving. She and a sick Jason met one morning to discuss her experiences in the outdoors, her work as a water quality scientist for Heal the Bay, and her love for water (but not oceans).

Now, he shares his years of experience with others as a Scoutmaster, father, and REI instructor. Michael and Jason spent a morning at Will Rogers State Park discussing waves, roads, and the benefits of being a beginner.

G.O. 075 - Grand Explorer Rich Rudow

Rich Rudow’s life has become intrinsically linked with the Grand Canyon. On a raft trip in 1989, he became enamored with the mysteries beneath its rim. Having spent 1000 days within its walls and having helped establish many of its technical canyoneering routes, Rich is now recognized as an expert in the region by respected establishments such as National Geographic and Outside Magazine. Rich and Jason sat out a summer monsoon in Kanab to discuss his experiences in the canyon’s depths, his history as an entrepreneur, and the responsibility we share to protect natural places.

G.O. 073 - Earth Astronaut Adam Haydock

Adam Haydock’s intent was to become a state trooper, but circumstance shifted his path into dive rescue ultimately leading him to exploration. He now journeys into the depths of the Earth and its bodies of water as an expedition caver, photographer, canyoneer, and divemaster. Adam and Jason met at a park in Bishop one afternoon to discuss the world beneath the waves, beneath the soil, and across the globe.

A roadtrip at 17 introduced Lyndsay Hupp to the wonders of Arizona and the Western U.S. Her future would be found there guiding others through the whitewaters of the Colorado River and accidentally founding the energy bar company Huppybar. She and Jason met at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff one morning to discuss her history as a Jock Art Nerd Scientist and the exciting adventures that lead to Huppybar.

Freddy Unger is recognized in the Southern California canyoneering community as an active leader eager to share his knowledge and offer opportunities to new participants. Prior to discovering canyoneering, he was struggling with substance abuse and watching his life erode. He credits the friendships he developed in the outdoors as a lifesaver. Freddy and Jason sat near a distracting water fountain one morning discussing the benefits of the outdoors, true friendships, maintaining sobriety, and why Freddy avoids driving.

Amanda Craft is a consummate outdoor Renaissance Woman. Raised in California and summered in Colorado, she spent her youth on horseback or in nature. While trying to pad her professional resume during her college years, she began accidentally discovering the depths of her adventurous drive. Her explorations have taken her beneath the seas and earth, up and down its pinnacles, and flying and falling through its skies. She and Jason met on a Little Tujunga hillside one night to discuss her varied pursuits, the finer points of flight, the delectable bloodsicle, and the inspirations of “Rescuers Down Under.”

Jenn Velie is an amalgamation of her parent’s strengths. Inspired by her father’s love of the outdoors and her mother’s successes as an educator, she became an outdoor educator. As the Outdoor Adventure Coordinator at the University of Central Florida she has the opportunity to pass on the benefits of time in nature to students of all backgrounds and experiences. She and Jason met at a park in UCF to discuss SCUBA, surfing, sharks, the changes she sees in students, and a face mask full of mucus.
