G.O. 042 - Fundamentals of Nature with Jeannine Tidwell

Over a decade ago, Jeannine Tidwell and her husband moved to Sandpoint, Idaho on a path to fulfill a goal she formed as a young adult. They founded Twin Eagles Wilderness School, a place where students can connect with nature and their community while learning wilderness skills and becoming mentors for others. Jason and Jeannine met one rainy afternoon and discussed the history of the school, the philosophy behind its core tenets, and mankind’s relationship with the natural world.

G.O. 041 - Dav Underground ft. David Angel

Doing “nerdy stuff with computers” eventually lead David Angel to a corner of the internet where he was introduced to subterranean exploration. Soon he was a member of the Southern California Grotto, a caving group. Despite witnessing a tragedy on his first outing, he became more involved in the group eventually branching out into canyoneering and other adventurous pursuits. He and Jason bushwhacked through the overgrowth of a local L.A. canyon one night so they could sit in a dirty pothole and discuss caving, canyoneering, adventuring, administering ropewiki.com, and dealing with the aftermath of losing a close friend.

G.O. 040 - Outdoor Dilettante, Lauren Grabowski

Lauren Grabowski tossed aside the shackles of her adolescent safety after embarking upon a 50-mile day hike in college. As a collector of experiences, and self-proclaimed outdoor dilettante, she seeks varied adventures and novel locales. She does, although, have a special love for cycling and bikepacking and the opportunities traveling on two wheels can provide. She and Jason met in one of the rare spots in Los Angeles where its river looks like a river to discuss cycling, mountaineering, travel, living abroad, and the Grabowski Shuffle.

G.O. 037 - Alan Gegax, Vegas' Hiking Mailman

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays Alan Gegax from an epic hike. When not delivering mail to the Vegas community, Alan leads one of the larger hiking Meetup groups in the West, Vegas Hiker’s Meetup. And when not leading hikes, he officiates outdoor weddings and writes stories for Desert Companion Magazine. Alan and Jason hid amongst a pile of rocks in Calico Hills and discussed the finer points of hiking groups, disastrous first backpacking trips, the joys of scrambling over rocks, and the ways the outdoors can change a person for the better.

G.O. 031 - Roundtable: Solo Backpacking

Some choose to travel into the wilderness alone. Jason discusses the pros and cons of solitary backpacking with previous show guests: Shawnte, Pamela, and Alden in between sips of cocoa and bouts of laughter. They review the whys, the dangers, loneliness, planning, packing, navigation, hiker stink, 29 cat holes, and the rancid aroma of bear saliva.

G.O. 029 - Documenting Smiles With PRCPTION Travel

Jordan Urbanovich and Evelyn Wilroy were high school friends enamored with travel. Jordan embraced a nomadic existence and turned exploring the world into a lifestyle. Evelyn pursued a traditional career path and found herself yearning for more. The two joined forces to travel Nepal and document their journey while building an entity known as PRCPTION Travel, a non-profit using media to connect the world. Jason met Evelyn and Jordan in Towsley Canyon Park where they discussed travel, fear, social media, connectivity, and creating music with Jamaican children.

G.O. 028 - Misadventures Off the Map With Bryan Snyder

Self-proclaimed renegade car camper Bryan Snyder has a penchant for finding trouble. Each summer, he travels across the U.S. with his trusty sidekick, Charlie—his aging Jeep. He shares his misadventures with heights, weather, wildlife, and circumstance through his books and ongoing column in the Chenango County newspaper. One morning he and Jason huddled amongst some boulders at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and discussed Bryan’s numerous adventures, his path to self-publishing, the merits of Outdoor Science Schools, and the allure of off-limits European towers.

G.O. 027 - Shawnte Salabert, Human Yogi Bear

Shawnte Salabert was raised on the mean streets of Milwaukie where a local Boys and Girls Club introduced her to the outdoors. Her newfound love of camp and adventure led her away from Wisconsin as she sought the secrets of becoming Yogi Bear in human form. Eventually, she stumbled into Los Angeles where her snark landed her a side gig writing for Modern Hiker when she isn’t hiking or drooling over Mark Ruffalo. Jason and Little Shay Shay tried to stay on topic one night in Silverlake Meadow as they discussed her life and mocked each other.

G.O. 021 - Essential Explorer Kristina Frost

Kristina Frost grew up playing on the shores of Lake Erie. An offhand comment spurred her to try backpacking. This stoked an interest in her that has not abated. Kristina became an assistant director for the University of Michigan’s Outdoor Adventures Program where she led wilderness trips and taught clinics. Now on the West Coast, she organizes women-only adventures and has begun pursuing filmmaking. She and Jason met at her office in San Francisco to discuss her outdoor history, the formation of Essential Explorer, and the challenges of windless kite-skiing trips.
