G.O. 034 - Kat & Craig on Lucky Breaks, Pics, Sticks, and Hitches

Kat Carney and Craig Kinsley have embraced a life of coincidences and (occasionally literal) lucky breaks. A broken hand lead Craig down an unexpected path that would bring him to the 2012 Olympics as a Javelin Thrower. A part-time job as a newspaper reporter ignited Kat’s pursuit of photography and varied experiences. Seasonal jobs away from home brought the two together in Alaska where they would become a couple. Now they are preparing to move into a Suburban and travel the U.S. Jason met them in San Diego where they reminisced about past hitchhiking adventures, recent sandboarding experiences, and their respective passions.

G.O. 022 - Dr. Tommy Day is Real In

Tommy Day is a physician, but he is also an adventurer. Traveling on two wheels or casting for fish bring him a joy he can’t find elsewhere. He is also a photographer. Capturing moments in still images or in moving video allow him to share stories that matter with others. He and Jason sat on Tommy’s roof deck at his home in Oregon after multiple days of shooting video in wet canyons to discuss his outdoor pursuits and the challenges of career changes.

G.O. 021 - Essential Explorer Kristina Frost

Kristina Frost grew up playing on the shores of Lake Erie. An offhand comment spurred her to try backpacking. This stoked an interest in her that has not abated. Kristina became an assistant director for the University of Michigan’s Outdoor Adventures Program where she led wilderness trips and taught clinics. Now on the West Coast, she organizes women-only adventures and has begun pursuing filmmaking. She and Jason met at her office in San Francisco to discuss her outdoor history, the formation of Essential Explorer, and the challenges of windless kite-skiing trips.

G.O. 006 - Dusty Hulet, Yellowstone Legend

Dusty Hulet may not have been born in a tent—perhaps to his father’s chagrin—but he did grow up never missing a Boy Scout camp-out. Being raised in an active outdoor family laid a foundation for adventure in him that continues to grow. He makes a living as an entrepreneur and filmmaker, occasionally crawling through bear dens, and pursues a variety of activities on the side. He can be found in the snow or in raging rivers, perhaps even on horseback. He was once responsible for the lives and good times of many vacationers seated on his Alaskan tour bus and is to blame for the temporary sitings of the elusive Yellowstone Gorilla. Jason found him momentarily in Liberty Park in Salt Lake City where they chatted about his life instead of allowing him to prepare for a trip to Haiti.
